Barry Ryan

Barry Ryan, President and CEO, Sofia University.  He earned his BA in History (magna cum laude) from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, followed by an M.Div. from Fuller Seminary, Pasadena.  While there, he was encouraged to pursue doctoral studies, which he did at the University of California, Santa Barbara, earning a Ph.D. "with distinction.”  His doctoral research at the University of London and Oxford was supported as a University of California Regents Scholar.  Lastly, he earned a J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. Tenured in two disciplines, his years of academic service also included the roles of department chair, dean, vice president, and president in institutions on both coasts.  An advocate of the internationalization of higher education, he developed, led and taught in a number of programs in Europe and Latin America, as well as earning a Diploma in Global Business from Oxford University, emphasizing international education.  Dr. Ryan has significant experience in the field of law.  While a litigation associate in a large San Francisco law firm, he continued to teach law at Berkeley.  Later, he took a brief hiatus from academia to serve as the Judicial Fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States, in the chambers of former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. As part of a long commitment to excellence in health care, particularly in pediatrics, Dr. Ryan serves as chair of the Foundation Board of CHOC Children's Hospital of Orange County, and is active in various other charitable causes.
