Herbert Lee

Herbert Lee, Professor of Statistics in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering, has been Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) at UCSC since September 2010 and Accreditation Liaison Officer since July 2011. As VPAA, Lee provides administrative leadership in key academic areas, including program development and review, academic human resources, accreditation, online education, and the Center for Teaching and Learning; in the position, he also oversees the UCSC Arboretum. For much of this time, Lee also served as the campus’s chief diversity officer for faculty — helping promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at UCSC.
Lee received his B.S. from Yale University and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. He completed a post-doc at Duke University before joining the UCSC faculty in 2002. His research interests include Bayesian statistics, computer simulation experiments, inverse problems, spatial statistics, and neural networks.
