Why did WSCUC review its 2023 Standards of Accreditation?
WSCUC reviewed its 2023 Standards and policies to ensure alignment with federal directives. The Standards review process provided an opportunity to strengthen WSCUC’s commitment to institutional effectiveness, student-centered outcomes, and success for every student while supporting continued federal financial aid access for students served by WSCUC-accredited institutions.
WSCUC released updated Standards for public comment in August 2025. Which institutions and stakeholders provided feedback on the proposed updates?
WSCUC member institutions and other higher education stakeholders provided feedback on the proposed updates to the Standards.
How did the public comments shape the updated Standards adopted by the Commission?
The Standards Review Work Group reviewed submissions on a rolling basis and evaluated feedback for alignment with WSCUC’s focus on student outcomes, educational quality, and accountability and responsibilities under federal law. The Work Group’s final recommendation to the Commission reflects the most salient themes from the public comments: language clarity and how CFR 1.2 should be interpreted and applied. The feedback was invaluable in ensuring the updated Standards adopted by the Commission are clear, rigorous, and advance student success.
When do the updated 2023 Standards take effect?
Consistent with past practice, the updated Standards take effect upon adoption, with the effective date set for October 6, 2025.
Do the updated Standards change WSCUC’s commitment to success for all students?
WSCUC’s longstanding commitment to success for all students has not changed. WSCUC’s Standards emphasize academic excellence and institutional integrity in service of student success and meaningful student outcomes. Ensuring that every student has an opportunity to succeed is and will remain our enduring goal.
The Executive Order on accreditation conflicts with policies in the state where my institution operates. What should we do?
WSCUC recognizes that institutions may operate in jurisdictions with differing legal requirements. In such cases, institutions should consult legal counsel and communicate with WSCUC about how they are navigating compliance. We will work with institutions to understand the context and support reasonable adaptations.
Will institutions be asked to revise previous self-study materials or reports now that the updated 2023 Standards are in effect?
WSCUC will not ask institutions to revise previously submitted materials. WSCUC may request supplemental information or clarifications and will work with institutions on a case-by-case basis.
How will WSCUC support institutions navigating changes in federal policy?
WSCUC will continue to offer timely updates, guidance documents, and one-on-one support through our staff liaisons. We encourage institutions to stay informed and consult with their own legal counsel as needed.
